No. Employers must obtain your written consent before viewing your driving record. Employers must obtain written consent before viewing any driving record. UK Drivers Licence Hub manages the entire process on your behalf.
A standard check shows your driving entitlements (categories), expiry date, current penalty points and endorsements, and any disqualifications. It does not show personal address or medical information.
Best practice is to check driver licences at least every 6 months for regular drivers, and every 3 months for high-risk or professional drivers. New employees should be checked before they begin driving.
The employee must stop driving immediately. Allowing someone with an invalid licence to drive on company business can expose the employer to criminal liability, insurance voidance, and civil claims.

Renewal Types

Your photocard must be renewed every 10 years (or every 3 years after age 70). Apply by post using the D1 form or contact UK Drivers Licence Hub for full renewal assistance. You'll need a recent passport-style photo and your current licence details.
If your photocard has expired, your driving entitlement may still be valid โ€” but you must renew the card. You can renew at any time. Apply online for ยฃ14. You cannot legally drive with an expired card once DVLA has contacted you.
From age 70, your licence must be renewed every 3 years. DVLA will write to you 90 days before expiry. The renewal is free of charge. You must declare any medical conditions that could affect your driving.
Apply for a replacement online for ยฃ20, or by post for ยฃ43. You'll need a passport-style photo and, if your licence was stolen, a crime reference number from the police. Your entitlement is not affected.
You're legally required to update your driving licence when you change your name or address. Update your address free online, or apply for a new photocard with a name change for ยฃ14. Post applications require the D1 form.
If you hold a foreign licence and have become a UK resident, you may need to exchange it for a UK licence. Some non-EEA licences can be exchanged; others require passing a UK driving test. Contact UK Drivers Licence Hub for guidance.

New Driver Rules

If you passed your test less than 2 years ago, your licence will be revoked if you reach 6 or more penalty points. You will have to re-apply for a provisional licence and pass both tests again.

Most penalty points remain on your licence for 4 years from the date of the offence. For more serious offences like drink driving (DR codes), they remain for 11 years.
For minor speeding offences, you may be offered a National Speed Awareness Course (typically ยฃ100) instead of points. This is at the discretion of the police and is not available if you've attended one within the past 3 years.
When you accumulate 12 or more penalty points within a 3-year period, the court must normally disqualify you for at least 6 months. This is known as "totting up." You can make representations to avoid or reduce the disqualification in exceptional circumstances.

Your Legal Duty as an Employer

Under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act 2007, employers have a legal duty of care to ensure that any driver using a vehicle for work purposes holds a valid driving licence appropriate for that vehicle. Failure to verify licences can result in criminal prosecution, unlimited fines, and civil liability in the event of an accident.

  • Check licences before employees begin driving for work
  • Re-check at regular intervals (minimum every 6 months)
  • Obtain written driver consent before each check
  • Keep records of all checks and consents
  • Act immediately on any notification of disqualification or suspension

The UK government's digital identity framework is ongoing. Physical photocard licences remain the legal standard. UK Drivers Licence Hub monitors and advises on developments as they are officially confirmed.

Mobile Driving Licence (mDL)

A mobile driving licence stores your credentials on a smartphone in a tamper-proof encrypted format, using the ISO/IEC 18013-5 international standard. The UK is actively piloting this technology.

QR Code Verification

A QR code on your digital licence allows police, employers, and hire companies to instantly verify your entitlements and check for endorsements โ€” without needing to handle a physical card.

Digital ID Wallet

A secure digital wallet on your phone or device stores your driving licence alongside other credentials such as passport, proof of age, and professional certificates.

Electronic Driver ID

Electronic driver identification systems authenticate drivers through biometric checks or digital tokens, replacing the need to present a physical card in commercial vehicle cabs and fleet operations.

Smart Driving Licence

A smart licence chip embedded in the physical card can store additional data including medical declarations, tachograph authorisation, and category-specific restrictions that can be read digitally at roadside checks.

Fraud Prevention

Digital licences are significantly harder to forge than physical cards. Cryptographic signatures, biometric binding, and real-time revocation checks make digital credentials more secure for everyone.

Register a New Vehicle

Newly imported or built vehicles must be registered with the DVLA before being driven on UK roads. UK Drivers Licence Hub assists with V55/4 form completion, first registration fee payment, and DVLA submission.

Vehicle Ownership Check

Verify who a vehicle is registered to, check for outstanding finance, stolen status, or insurance write-off markers before purchasing a used vehicle.

Vehicle Tax (VED) Check

Check whether a vehicle's road tax (Vehicle Excise Duty) is current. Untaxed vehicles can be clamped and their keeper fined up to ยฃ1,000.

Transfer of Ownership (V5C)

When buying or selling a vehicle, both parties must notify the DVLA using the V5C logbook. UK Drivers Licence Hub provides guidance and assistance on completing transfers correctly.

Compliance Dashboard

A centralised view of your entire fleet's compliance status. Track licence validity, penalty point thresholds, DBS expiry dates, and training certifications in real time.

Driver Risk Management

Identify and act on high-risk drivers before an incident occurs. Risk scoring based on points history, claims data, telematics, and driver behaviour assessments.

Driver Monitoring

Ongoing behavioural monitoring through telematics integration. Track speeding, harsh braking, phone use, seatbelt compliance, and journey patterns.

Driver Audit System

Structured audits of your driving policy, procedures, and records. Produce audit-ready reports for insurers, local authorities, FORS, CLOCS, or ISO 39001 road safety management.

Road Safety Compliance

Policy development, driver training programmes, toolbox talks, and road safety campaigns aligned with THINK!, ROSPA, and government road safety guidance.

Fleet Risk Calculator

Estimate the financial and legal risk exposure of your current fleet based on driver profiles, vehicle types, and annual mileage. Receive a risk reduction action plan.

AI Driver Verification

Machine learning models analyse driving licence documents in real time, detecting forgeries, expiry dates, and category entitlements with 99.7% accuracy. Faster and more reliable than manual checks.

Biometric Verification

Facial recognition and liveness detection match the driver presenting themselves against the photograph held on their driving licence record, preventing identity fraud and impersonation.

OCR Identity Verification

Optical Character Recognition (OCR) extracts data from driving licences, passports, and other identity documents, feeding it directly into compliance systems without manual data entry errors.

Fraud Detection

Real-time anomaly detection flags suspicious applications, duplicate identities, synthetic fraud attempts, and altered documents before they can cause harm to your organisation.

Transport Analytics

Aggregate data from driver checks, telematics, and compliance records to produce actionable insights. Identify fleet-wide risk trends, cost savings, and opportunities to improve safety outcomes.

Automated KYC

Know-Your-Customer processes powered by automated identity verification reduce onboarding time for commercial drivers, ride-share operators, and gig economy platforms from days to minutes.

Contact UK Drivers Licence Hub to verify any driving licence quickly and securely. Our team checks validity, entitlements, and endorsements on your behalf โ€” no portal access required. Call us, WhatsApp us, or use our online form.
Employers must obtain written consent from each driver before checking their licence record. UK Drivers Licence Hub manages the full process on behalf of employers โ€” from obtaining written driver consent to delivering a complete licence status report with entitlements, points, and any disqualifications.
No. You cannot renew or use a driving licence while it is suspended or under a court disqualification. Once the disqualification period ends, you will need to apply to have your licence reinstated. In some cases, you may need to retake your driving test. Contact UK Drivers Licence Hub for legal guidance.
A provisional licence applied for online typically arrives within one week. A postal application can take up to three weeks. DVLA may request additional checks, which can extend processing time. UK Drivers Licence Hub's assisted service helps ensure your application is complete to avoid delays.
A provisional licence allows you to drive while supervised by a qualified driver and with L-plates displayed. A full licence is issued after passing your practical driving test and allows unsupervised driving. Some vehicle categories require additional tests even after obtaining a full car licence.
Penalty points typically increase your car insurance premium. The impact depends on the number of points, the type of offence, and your insurer. Some offences such as drink driving (DR10) can make it very difficult to find affordable cover. You must declare penalty points to your insurer; failing to do so can void your policy.
On a provisional car (category B) licence, you can drive a car with an approved accompanying driver aged 21 or over who has held a full licence for at least 3 years. You cannot drive on a motorway unless accompanied by an approved driving instructor in a car fitted with dual controls.

What Isโ€ฆ

Driving licence verification is the process of confirming that a driving licence is genuine, valid, unexpired, and belongs to the person presenting it. In the UK, this is done through the DVLA's View Driving Licence service. Employers, hire companies, and police can verify a licence using a check code provided by the driver. Verification confirms the holder's driving entitlements, penalty points, and any disqualifications.
A provisional driving licence is the first licence issued to a learner driver in the UK. It permits the holder to drive on public roads while supervised by a qualified driver aged 21 or over, who has held a full licence for at least 3 years. The holder must display L-plates and cannot drive on motorways unless accompanied by an approved driving instructor in a dual-control vehicle. A provisional licence costs ยฃ34 online or ยฃ43 by post.
A digital driving licence (also called a mobile driving licence or mDL) is a digital representation of your driving credentials stored on a smartphone or device. It uses the international standard ISO/IEC 18013-5 and allows the holder to prove their identity and driving entitlements without carrying a physical card. The UK government is piloting digital licence technology as part of its broader digital identity framework.
The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) is a UK government executive agency of the Department for Transport, based in Swansea. It maintains the register of all UK drivers and vehicles, issues driving licences, collects vehicle excise duty (road tax), and holds records of penalty points and disqualifications. UK Drivers Licence Hub is an authorised partner supporting individuals and businesses with DVLA-related services.
A penalty point (also called an endorsement) is added to your driving licence when you are convicted of a driving offence. Points are recorded alongside the conviction code on your licence record. Accumulating 12 or more points within 3 years normally leads to a minimum 6-month disqualification. New drivers (within 2 years of passing) face revocation at just 6 points. Most points remain on your licence for 4 years; serious offences (such as drink driving) remain for 11 years.
Fleet driver verification is the process by which an employer or fleet manager checks the driving licence status of every driver who operates a company vehicle. Under UK law, employers have a duty of care to ensure all drivers hold valid, appropriate licences. Fleet verification typically involves obtaining driver consent, checking current entitlements and endorsements, and scheduling regular re-checks. UK Drivers Licence Hub provides bulk fleet verification for companies of all sizes.

How Toโ€ฆ

Contact UK Drivers Licence Hub to check your licence online. Our team verifies your driving entitlements, expiry date, and endorsement status quickly and securely. Simply call, WhatsApp, or submit our online form with your details.
UK Drivers Licence Hub handles your renewal from start to finish. Provide your current details and a passport-style photo โ€” our team completes the D1 form, checks your documentation, and submits your renewal to DVLA Swansea (SA99 1AD) with the ยฃ43 fee. Contact us to get started.
UK Drivers Licence Hub guides you through the full D1 form application (ยฃ43 by post). You need a UK passport or approved ID, your National Insurance number, and a passport-style photo. You can apply from age 15 years and 9 months. Contact us for assisted application support.
When you are convicted of a motoring offence, the court or police add an endorsement to your driving licence record. Each endorsement carries a conviction code (e.g. SP30 for speeding) and a points value (typically 3โ€“11 points). The points are totted up: reaching 12 points in 3 years normally results in a 6-month ban. Points are automatically removed from your licence after 4 years (or 11 years for serious offences), though they remain visible on your full record for longer.
UK Drivers Licence Hub runs employer driver checks on your behalf: (1) We obtain the driver's written consent. (2) Our team verifies their licence entitlements, penalty points, and any disqualifications. (3) We provide a full report and schedule regular re-checks to keep your fleet compliant.
UK Drivers Licence Hub can help you book your theory test (ยฃ23) or practical test (from ยฃ62). Contact our team with your preferred location and dates โ€” we find the earliest available slot at your nearest test centre and handle the booking on your behalf.

Why & When

Employers have a legal duty of care under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 to ensure that anyone driving on company business holds a valid and appropriate licence. Failing to verify could result in criminal prosecution, unlimited fines, voided insurance, civil liability, and reputational damage if an employee is involved in an accident while unlicensed or disqualified.
A UK photocard driving licence expires every 10 years (the photo must be renewed). From age 70, the licence must be renewed every 3 years. Your driving entitlement itself does not expire when the card does โ€” but you must renew the photocard. DVLA sends a reminder 90 days before expiry. Driving with an expired photocard after being asked to renew it is an offence.
Insurance companies use penalty points as a statistical indicator of driving risk. Drivers with endorsements are statistically more likely to make a claim, so insurers increase premiums to reflect this risk. You are legally required to declare penalty points to your insurer. Failing to do so can void your policy, meaning any claim is rejected and you could be charged with driving without valid insurance.
You can drive unsupervised immediately after passing your practical driving test, provided your provisional licence is valid. However, within 2 years of passing, you are subject to the new driver rules โ€” if you accumulate 6 or more penalty points, your licence is revoked and you must re-sit both theory and practical tests. There is no formal probationary period, but insurers may charge higher premiums for newly qualified drivers.
The DVLA has been based in Swansea, Wales since it was established in 1965 (originally as the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Centre). The Swansea location was chosen as part of a government policy to decentralise public sector organisations from London. Today, DVLA Swansea employs around 6,000 staff and handles over 40 million driver records and 40 million vehicle records.

How We Build Authority

Our Answer Engine Optimisation Strategy

Every piece of content on UK Drivers Licence Hub is structured to answer a specific question โ€” the way a person, or an AI assistant, would ask it.

Q

Question-First Content

Every page starts with the exact question it answers โ€” "How do I renew my driving licence?" โ€” structured for featured snippets and AI citations.

A

Direct Answers First

The answer appears in the first paragraph โ€” no preamble. AI assistants extract the first clear, concise answer to a question when forming responses.

S

Structured Data

Every page uses Schema.org JSON-LD markup โ€” FAQPage, HowTo, Article โ€” so search engines and AI systems understand exactly what each page contains.

D

Deep Coverage

We cover every sub-topic, edge case, and related question within each subject โ€” making us the most comprehensive source on each topic we cover.

C

Consistent Updates

Driving law, DVLA fees, and test rules change. We update every affected page within 24 hours of any official DVLA or DVSA announcement.

L

Local Coverage

City and region-specific pages answer questions like "driving test centres in Manchester" for both local search and AI location-aware queries.
